Menu translations made simple

See how common menu phrases and price signs turn into clear choices you can order with confidence.

Example 1: sharing tapas in Spain

You're in a Spanish restaurant and see PARA COMPARTIR above Pan con tomate 6,50, Gambas al ajillo 14, and Pulpo a la gallega 18. PARA COMPARTIR means 'to share'—it is a section title, not a dish.

The translated menu keeps each dish beside its own price. Show the original Spanish name to the server when you order, and everyone knows exactly which dish you mean.

  • Pan con tomate → Tomato bread · 6.50
  • Gambas al ajillo → Garlic shrimp · 14
  • Pulpo a la gallega → Galician-style octopus · 18

Example 2: 'extra noodles +¥6' is not a dish

On a Chinese menu, 红烧牛肉面 ¥38 and 番茄鸡蛋面 ¥30 are dishes. 加面 +¥6 means add extra noodles for ¥6, so it belongs with your order instead of appearing as another main dish.

Keeping the plus sign makes the choice clear: your noodles cost ¥38 or ¥30, and an extra portion costs ¥6 more.

  • 红烧牛肉面 → Braised beef noodles · ¥38
  • 番茄鸡蛋面 → Tomato and egg noodles · ¥30
  • 加面 → Extra noodles · +¥6

Quick guide to common price signs

Small signs can change what you pay. Read them together with the words beside them.

  • 14 / 22 usually means two sizes, such as small and large or glass and bottle.
  • MP means market price—ask the server for today's price.
  • +3 means that option costs 3 more.
  • 12,50 € is the same style of price as €12.50, written the local way.

A 10-second check before ordering

Before you show the order to the server, check three things: no dish is missing, each price sits beside the right dish, and extras still have their + sign.

If you have an allergy or dietary need, ask the restaurant directly. A translation can explain the menu, but only the restaurant can confirm ingredients and kitchen handling.

  • Is every dish included?
  • Is each price beside the right dish?
  • Do extras and upgrades still show their + sign?
